Punitive charges impacting local residents and businesses

Earlier today, I met with my good friend and Mytchett resident Attieh Fard at Wharf Road Car Park in Frimley Green to discuss her car parking charges survey, which is currently being distributed around the community.

Residents might remember that Attieh petitioned the Liberal Democrat run Surrey Heath Borough Council regarding parking charges.

Some Lib Dem councillors dismissed her petition out of hand, declaring it "redundant." Clearly, they do not care what local residents think about this matter. Nonetheless, undeterred, like a true community champion, Attieh has persisted and will present her petition to Surrey Heath Borough Council in a few weeks.

In support of that, Attieh has created a survey asking residents their views on the new car parking charges and the reduction in the free period. These arrangements have been in place for some time, so it would be helpful for local residents to complete the survey so that when Attieh presents her petition, she has the most up-to-date information from local residents about the level of impact these punitive charges are having on them and on local businesses.

This is a real opportunity for local residents to make an impact by pressuring the Lib Dem run council to deliver on its election promises to "devolve power to, and work in genuine partnership with, residents."

Please help me raise awareness of Attieh's petition and survey by telling your friends and neighbours and sharing this link with them, which is a letter from Attieh to all local residents. This is one of those occasions where we must unite and project the real power of the community by telling the Council what you expect of it. At least then, if they ignore you, no one can say they were unaware of local sentiments on this issue.

I know the strength of feeling over this issue, so I want to thank Attieh for her tenacity on behalf of local residents. We are lucky to have people like Attieh in our community willing to put their heads above the parapet.

- Cllr Paul Deach, Surrey County Councillor for Mytchett, Frimley Green & Deepcut
