Increase in car parking charges forcing residents to avoid shopping locally

Car park charging petition

I spoke with many residents in Surrey Heath on Saturday. Almost everyone was unhappy about the reduction of one hour parking to 30 minutes.

A few told me since the changes have been made they have started shopping in Farnborough instead as the parking charges are much cheaper and the residents can’t afford or be prepared to pay £5 for about 3 hours or at least £2.50 just to get to the bank in Camberley Shopping centre, this is very concerning!

More businesses told me they are very unhappy about the changes. The vast majority of residents were very supportive of the lower parking charges campaign.

I subsequently went to Farnborough Gate where parking is free for 4 hours and the large car park was packed! I could understand where the residents were coming from, why should one for example use the TKMaxx in Camberley when they can park for free in Farnborough Gate? Or use the nail bars in Camberley when the Meadows car park in Farnborough charges less than a pound for an hour? One wonders how can Farnborough manage such low parking charges but Surrey Heath cannot!

I have now written to my local Councillors asking them to support me and the residents in this cause.

Please write to your own Councillors and also MP and ask them to support my campaign on 18th September 2024.

Please also take part in the parking survey if you have not completed it yet - we don’t have much time left - it is now only less than 3 weeks to the Full Council’s debate on this issue.
